Exterior
The 155-hp turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder engine in the Encore will provide ample power, but buyers should not expect any thrills. Front-wheel drive is standard, as is a six-speed automatic transmission; all-wheel drive is an extra $620. The Encore has a more top-heavy feel than lower-set rivals such as the Mazda CX-30 due to the occupants seating high atop a short wheelbase, and as a result, the Encore leans more strongly in corners.
The steering is well-weighted but not particularly engaging, yet it’s accurate and will appeal to consumers looking for a comfortable small crossover. In terms of comfort, the Encore’s suspension absorbs bumps wonderfully and dampens severe impacts admirably.

Interior
With a few exceptions, the interior of the Encore is practically premium despite its modest size. The door panels and lower center console have some rough plastics, and the glossy black trim on our test vehicle’s center stack didn’t match the glossy grey panels on the doors. Soft-touch parts on the armrests and dash pad, on the other hand, contribute to a more upmarket ambiance, as do the flush-mounted infotainment touchscreen and jewel-colored background highlights.
The front-seat layout is fairly nice, with simple controls and redundant knobs on the dash for climate control. The high seating and comfortable driving position were welcomed, however, larger drivers may find the seat bottom too narrow.
