The Sierra HD comes standard with a 6.6-liter V-8 engine that produces 401 hp and 464 pound-feet of torque. It comes with a six-speed automatic transmission and either rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. The optional Duramax diesel 6.6-liter V-8 produces 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque through an Allison 10-speed automatic transmission.
You can also choose between a single and dual rear axle (known as a “dually”). While we’ve only tested the diesel version, we did test the gas-powered powerplant on the internally similar Chevy Silverado 2500HD and were impressed with its obedient conduct. However, there’s no denying that the Duramax/Allison engine combo is a highlight of the massive Sierra, and it’s a no-brainer for individuals who tow large weights on a daily basis.

Interior
The Sierra 2500HD and 3500HD have a large dashboard with easy-to-use controls. Most models come standard with a split-folding front bench that can be swapped out for a pair of bucket seats and a full center console. Interior options for the Sierra include a head-up display, a heated steering wheel, heated-and-cooled front seats, and wireless charging.
Unfortunately, the panel fittings and material quality in the cabin are subpar at best. While there are many soft-touch surfaces throughout, and most models have durable plastics, the top-of-the-line Denali falls far short of its luxury billing. The fanciest Ram alternatives outperform the GMC mostly due to their substantially more upmarket appearance and feel.
