Exterior
I didn’t get close to those lofty estimates, but after 509 miles on the lockdown since Christmas, a real-world peak of 86.3mpg isn’t too shabby. These data, however, reveal the reality of driving a PHEV. If you don’t charge, you’ll be making regular excursions to the gas station.
When you plug it in, the economic benefits are obvious – and if you get your electricity from a green energy supplier, the environmental benefits are as well. A complete EV would be much better in this regard, but that’s a topic for another day. Right now, being able to balance electric power with fossil fuel works for me, as we’ve attempted to demonstrate in these images.

Interior
Inside, the only difference is a few PHEV-specific displays on the optional Virtual Cockpit, which was equipped for our test vehicle. In truth, the only major difference is a somewhat smaller boot; the battery takes 140 litres seats-up, but with a capacity of 485 litres, it’s far from compromised. There’s also underfloor storage to keep the charging cords out of the way, which isn’t as common in PHEVs as you might think.
Even before lockdown, I didn’t have to charge it very often because the Superb iV has an official electric range of 34 miles. It’s a statistic that seems to be fairly true when I drive slowly and utilize the most severe brake regen option.
