There’s no need for surprise here: we drove the 2022 Audi R8 V10 Performance RWD above, below, and across Gran Canaria’s volcanic cliffs, and it’s fantastic.
This should be the least shocking news of 2021 for anyone familiar with Audi’s side-bladed halo car. Since 2006, the alphanumeric “R8” has meant for one thing: astonishingly accessible handling in a gorgeous package.
Thankfully, the R8’s goodness was able to sweep away just a couple of the lumpy, paper-clip corners. Make that wiped away once more.
The coupe squirms a little while hard braking with the carbon stoppers, the kind that drops three figures of speed before a curve. There’s nothing eerie about it; it’s just… alive. Every other aspect of hard charging is in place and ready to begin.

Acceleration strikes like a longbow arrow – straight, true, and penetrating. The R8’s exhaust noise shifted in lockstep with the tachometer, but a decade of turbocharged performance cars has changed our perceptions.
In the Audi, when a sweet, feral cacophony in the cabin convinced us we were about to cross that thin red line, we’d glance at the revs and find we had two thousand more in reserve, begging to be put to work. Joy.

The R8 RWD has a slight power disadvantage over the Quattro model, but it isn’t significant. With the rear-drive arrangement, the V10 produces 562 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, down 40 hp and 7 lb-ft from the R8 Quattro. RWD R8s are 0.4 seconds slower than their all-wheel-drive counterparts in the crucial 0-to-60-mph race. By the way, none of this matters in the real world; anyone who claims they can really detect the extra 40 horsepower or less-than-half-second acceleration time disparity on public roads in a car like this is a liar on fire.

Due to the removal of the front differential, prop shaft, and multi-plate clutch, the R8 RWD is 67 pounds lighter than the Quattro. The RWD car also has a stiffer front anti-roll bar, a solid rear axle (rather than the hollow design of the Quattro), and higher negative camber in the rear wheels.
Both the R8 Coupe and the R8 Spyder receive these updates, with the latter gaining 97 pounds due to its electronic roof mechanism. Speaking of which, dropping the top on your R8 takes only 20 seconds and can be done at speeds of up to 31 mph.
