The A6’s two powertrains—a 261-hp turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder and a 335-hp turbocharged 3.0-liter V-6—are more than adequate for towing this mid-size sedan around town. Both powertrains use hybrid technology, which includes a 12- or 48-volt starter/alternator that powers the engine’s stop-start system as well as other ancillary equipment.
Both a seven-speed automatic gearbox and all-wheel drive are standard. The V-6 provides plenty of power for merging and passing on the highway, charging from zero to 60 mph in 4.8 seconds on our test track. Despite this quick result, it isn’t quite fast enough to outrun its main competitors, the BMW 540i xDrive and the Mercedes-Benz E450 4Matic. The 540i ran in 4.5 seconds, while the Benz ran in 4.6.

Interior
The interior of the A6 is sleek, modern, and well-crafted from high-quality materials. The seats and armrests are upholstered in soft leather, and the dash and doors are accented with rich-looking wood and nickel-finished metal trim. The majority of the A6’s secondary controls—climate, drive mode, and so on—are handled by a large touch-sensitive panel beneath the main infotainment display.
A similar system is used in the A8 luxury sedan and the Q8 crossover, and it works well and provides satisfying haptic feedback, despite our usual gripes about the takeover of touchscreen controls. The A6 is ideal for hauling cargo thanks to its large trunk and easily foldable rear seatbacks. Six of our carry-on suitcases fit in the trunk, which connects the E450 and the 540i.
