The Audi S3 2.0T Premium comes standard with a 2.0L I-4 306hp intercooled turbo engine, a 7-speed auto-shift manual transmission with overdrive, 4-wheel anti-lock brakes (ABS), side seat mounted airbags, SIDE GUARD curtain 1st and 2nd row overhead airbags, driver and passenger knee airbag, airbag occupancy sensor, automatic air conditioning, 18-inch aluminium wheels, cruise control, ABS and driveline traction control, and Quattro.
In comparison to the competition: With buyers increasingly favouring SUVs, any tiny luxury sedan priced at about $35,000 would better be a beast to justify its existence. Both the A3 and the S3 have their moments, but flaws we discovered behind the wheel and elsewhere prohibit both cars from reaching their full potential.
The A3 is priced from the mid-$30,000s to around $50,000 with front- or all-wheel drive. The S3 has significantly more power and standard AWD, but it costs an extra $11,000 at either end of the trim range. We drove an A3 with AWD and Audi’s optional sport suspension around Cars.com’s Chicago headquarters, as well as the A3 and S3 back-to-back at a drive event in southeast Michigan in October.
The interior of the A3 is mostly devoid of physical buttons, save for a cluster of touch-sensitive stereo controls on the centre console, which includes the dreaded volume slider. Even so, I’ll take this over the multiple-touchscreen overkill found in many more expensive Audis.
The A3 and S3 have a single dashboard touchscreen with a diagonal of 10.1 inches, albeit the widescreen ratio renders the displayed area lower than the spec says. A 10.25-inch digital gauge display is included, as is wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration. A larger (12.3-inch) device is available as an alternative.

There is a scarcity of passenger space. The front chairs have a good sliding range but narrow beds that slam the knees of the passengers against the doors and console. For what these cars are, backseat legroom is adequate, but the low bench means adult passengers’ knees will be uncomfortably high – and there’s no compensation in headroom.
The A3 featured easy-access Latch anchors in our test of car-seat accommodations, but fitting our rear-facing infant and convertible seats necessitated pushing the front passenger seat so far forward that most adults couldn’t sit comfortably there.

The A3 begins at $34,945 with FWD (all prices include destination), which is comparable to other entry-luxury vehicles. It has heated leather seats with eight-way power adjustments as standard, as well as tri-zone climate control, a sunroof, lane departure warning with steering assist, and front collision warning with automatic emergency braking.
The S3 ($45,945) comes standard with AWD, while the A3 adds $2,000 to the price. Adaptive cruise control, hands-on lane centring, Nappa leather, bespoke paint, and upsized virtual gauges are among the available options. The A3 can cost up to $50,000 with factory options, while the S3 can cost up to $60,000.

For the same money as the A3, you can have a car with nicer interiors, more room, and better drivetrains — but not necessarily all in the same car, at least among luxury brands. (You can find that by moving down to mass-market brands, which has traditionally been the case with lower-end luxury vehicles, but that’s a topic for another day.)
There’s an equation somewhere in all of this that works for a specific A3 buyer, and if you’ve gotten this far, there’s a strong chance you want in on it. Even still, it’s a shaky rationale for a car with glaring problems.
