Exterior
The same two high-performance engines used in the 3-series are available in the 4-series. The 430i is powered by a 255-hp turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine. The M440i is driven by a silky-smooth turbocharged 3.0-litre inline-six with a 48-volt hybrid system that produces 382-hp.
The 4-series sedan has a sportier driving experience than the 3-series sedan due to a retuned suspension, more aggressive steering calibration, a wider rear track, and a lower centre of gravity. Nonetheless, we evaluated the M440i coupe and were more impressed with its driving dynamics than with its fantastic inline-six.

Interior
Unless they’re in the back seat, shoppers may not notice any difference between the cabins of the 4-series and the 3-series. The dashboard layout, internal materials, and major controls appear to be comparable to those of the four-door 3-series, while the 4-series’ lower roofline gives it a less spacious air.
Trunk capacity is less spacious than in the 3-series, particularly in the convertible form; in our testing, we were able to place five carry-on luggage in the coupe model’s trunk, one less than in the 3-series sedan.
