The 4-series Gran Coupe, like the conventional 3-series sedan and 4-series coupe, has a sleek and well-ordered cabin with your choice of a turbocharged four- or turbocharged six-cylinder engine.

The latter, known as the M440i, hit 60 mph in 3.9 seconds on our test track and seems capable enough on a curvy road to make you think “M3.” The back seat has less headroom than the more upright 3-series sedans, but the fastback form successfully conceals a big liftback-style rear door.

This year, BMW added all-wheel drive to the base 430i Gran Coupe. Similarly, the more powerful M440i, which was previously only available with all-wheel drive, is now available with rear-wheel drive. Exterior

There are two turbocharged powertrains available, both of which are superb. In the 430i variant, the base engine is a 2.0-litre four-cylinder with 255 horsepower. The more powerful upgrade engine is a 382-hp 3.0-litre inline-six aided by a 48-volt hybrid system. Both engines are standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and rear-wheel drive; all-wheel drive is available as an option.

We haven’t tested the 430i Gran Coupe, but an M440i accelerated to 60 mph in 3.9 seconds on our test track. Over large potholes, the suspension can feel a little stiff, but the payoff is agile handling that gives grin-inducing fun on a tight road.

Interior

The cabin design is similar to that of the 4-series coupe and convertible, with a driver-focused console that angles the climate controls and infotainment display slightly to the left. Although the materials are high-quality and the inside appears to be rather premium, rival sedans such as the new Mercedes-Benz C-class have more spectacular interior designs.

The rear seat is more spacious than in the two-door 4-series vehicle, although headroom is restricted in comparison to the 3-series sedan due to the Gran Coupe’s fastback roofline. The trunk of the Gran Coupe should have significantly more space for baggage, groceries, and other items than the two-door variants, but we won’t know how much extra space there is until we get one in for testing.
