BMW’s largest coupe and convertible are powered by a 335-hp turbocharged inline-six-cylinder engine. These 840i variants are available with an eight-speed automatic transmission and either rear- or all-wheel drive (referred to as xDrive in BMW speak). While we haven’t driven an 8 with the six-cylinder engine, BMW has earned a reputation for silky smooth and quick powertrains, so only speed demons will be dissatisfied.
Instead, we drove both body types of the M850i, which has a 523-hp twin-turbo V-8, an eight-speed automatic transmission, and standard all-wheel drive. This combination gives outstanding acceleration for a car of this size and rich audio in the sportiest mode. Similarly, the transmission shifts from relaxed to reactive in response to the driver’s right foot.

Interior
The cabin of the 2023 8-series has all of the infotainment technology and luxury features anticipated of a high-priced grand tourer. Every model comes standard with 14-way power-adjustable heated front seats, soft-close automated doors, and configurable ambient lighting; more expensive options include glass control and other high-end materials.
It can even be customized with BMW Individual options, such as a luxurious white-and-brown color scheme. Although it has a pair of relic rear seats, they are uncomfortable for adults to sit in. The low roofline of the 8 also limits headroom in the front seat and outward view, but that’s the price of fashion. Its interior cubby storage includes a coverable tray in front of the centre console, a helpful central bin, and ample door pockets.
