Exterior
The basic M5 has 600 horsepower from its twin-turbo 4.4-litre V-8 engine. This figure rises to 617 horses in the more track-focused Competition. We took the Competition’s V-8 to a dynamometer, believing it had considerably more power than that. Our suspicions were confirmed. We’ve also attached our testing equipment to both the standard M5 and the Competition model.
Both exceeded our expectations with lightning-fast acceleration, sports-car-like cornering grip, and incredible stopping power. Similarly, at the 2019 Lightning Lap competition, the Competition outperformed the standard M5 on Virginia International Raceway’s Grand Course. The M5 faithful will bemoan the loss of the manual transmission and all-wheel drive system, but this Bimmer features a high-tech drivetrain that can transfer 100% of its torque to the rear wheels for tail-wagging pleasure.

Interior
The M5 features a luxurious leather interior with supportive sports seats. Unlike many of its competitors, BMW has not gone all-touchscreen, so controlling the air conditioning or radio (using physical buttons) is simple while driving. The M5 has a plethora of desirable options, including programmable ambient inside lighting, a heated steering wheel, heated front seats, and a power-adjustable steering column.
For an additional fee, BMW provides ventilated front seats with massaging capability, heated back seats, and four-zone automatic temperature control. In terms of storage, the M5 offers helpful compartments in the cabin and a trunk that held six carry-on luggage during our testing.
