Exterior
A base four-cylinder with a six-speed automatic transmission, a quick 308-hp 3.6-liter V-6 with an eight-speed automatic, and a 2.8-liter diesel four-cylinder with an astonishing 369 pound-feet of torque are all available in Colorado. The V-6 and diesel engines are ideal dancing partners for Colorado, but the standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder is sluggish and surly.
We evaluated both the diesel and gasoline V-6 engines, and while they have very different personalities, both will serve their owners well. The diesel-powered ZR2 crew cab can’t keep up with the V-6-powered LT variant, which accelerates to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds. The Trailering Equipment kit is required to unlock Colorado’s maximum towing capability (7000 pounds with the V-6 and 7700 pounds with the diesel). Those who are used to sitting in the front seats of full-size vehicles will feel right at home in Colorado’s large cockpit. Cabin storage is provided by a large compartment under the rear seat of the crew cab and a deep center console bin. Colorado’s interior doesn’t handle as much carry-on baggage as the Honda Ridgeline (11 versus 18), but it can haul more cargo in either of its two large cargo beds, according to our research.
The Ridgeline’s capacity of 34 cubes is dwarfed by Colorado’s 41-cubic-foot short box and 50-cubic-foot long box. The Toyota Tacoma performs somewhat better than the Honda, with 38 cubic feet in the short-bed variant and 47 in the long-bed model, but Colorado takes the cargo-bed title.
