Exterior

The Palisade is powered by a 3.8-litre V-6 and has an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. The 291 horsepower engine delivers adequate acceleration for a vehicle of this size. The Palisade’s transmission can be shifted manually using steering-wheel-mounted paddles. When ascending hills, the gearbox shifts smoothly on its own, but there is some hectic shuffling of the gears.

Front-wheel drive is standard, with all-wheel aim available as an option on the SE, SEL, and Limited trim levels, but standard on the Calligraphy. All Palisade models include a gearbox cooler, trailer pre-wiring, and sway control as standard equipment. When equipped with the dealer-installed caravan hitch, it can tow up to 5000 pounds.

Our test drive in a loaded Calligraphy model in Asheville, North Carolina, highlighted the Palisade’s smooth ride and quiet cabin; we even tried some little off-roading and were satisfied that the huge SUV can manage terrain beyond that found in the urban jungle.

At our test track, an all-wheel-drive SEL showed unexceptional acceleration performance. In our testing, the Palisade went from zero to 60 mph in 6.9 seconds and stopped from 70 mph in 182 feet. It was faster than the Telluride but slower than the Chevrolet Traverse.

Interior

The SE and SEL trim levels seat eight passengers, while the Limited and Calligraphy trim levels have second-row captain’s seats that lower passenger capacity to seven. In any case, there is plenty of room for occupants in all three rows. A button in the second row moves the seat forward for easier access to the third row. The road noise is muffled; however, a significant quantity of wind noise enters via the doors.

Power-folding second and third-row seats are available as an option on the SEL but standard on the Limited and Calligraphy. With all seats folded, the cargo room is 86 cubic feet, and the Palisade fit 33 carry-on luggage in our testing. Stowage totals 46 cubic feet with the second row erect and the third row folded. The volume is reduced to 18 cubes when the third row is used. Muddy or wet objects can be stored beneath the load floor. The door cubbies are small, but there is adequate storage within and beneath the centre console.
