Exterior
The basic engine is a 3.2-liter V-6 with 270 horsepower, and an optional turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with torque. Both come with a nine-speed automatic transmission and either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. While we have yet to put the turbo engine through its paces at the track, we have spent time with it during our maiden drive.
We found it lacking in comparison to the V-6 Cherokee due to its sluggish responses to throttle inputs; the four-cylinder Cherokee also has reduced towing capacity (4000 pounds maximum towing capacity versus 4500 pounds for the V-6 Cherokee). The Cherokee drives with the heaviness and sturdiness you’d expect from a Jeep, making it feel larger than its competitors. Interior
The Cherokee’s cabin is comfortable, with supportive seats and simple controls. However, because the Cherokee is larger on the outside than many of its competitors, we expect it to be more spacious on the interior. Small windows and high windowsills add to the sense of confinement.
The Cherokee’s cargo area is smaller than that of most vehicles of this size, and internal cubby storage is just adequate at best.
