Exterior
The Sorento is available with front- or all-wheel drive and a variety of engine options. A 191-horsepower 2.5-liter inline-four-cylinder engine is standard, while a 281-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder is optional. Both have an eight-speed automatic transmission, while the hybrid has a six-speed automatic. We drove a top-of-the-line SX version with the turbo four and liked its obvious oomph, but we wished the powertrain felt more responsive right away.
The same model had composed handling, a well-isolated ride, and firm brake-pedal feedback. The eco-friendly Sorento hybrid is powered by a 1.6-liter four-cylinder gas engine and an electric motor that combine to produce 227 horsepower. The all-wheel-drive Sorento plug-in hybrid shares the same engine and transmission as the lesser hybrid, but thanks to a more powerful electric motor, the powertrain produces a combined 261 horsepower.
Interior
The interior of the Sorento is appealing, with decent materials and robust build quality. A 12.3-inch digital gauge cluster and a 10.3-inch touchscreen infotainment system are available for the dashboard. The rest of the design incorporates rhombus-shaped air vents, ambient lighting, and finely stitched surfaces on the door panels and seat inserts.
The console also has a number of cubby storage areas and cupholders. In addition to a regular third row, the second-row bench can be replaced with a pair of captain’s seats. The Sorento’s far-back seats aren’t as comfy for adults as the larger Telluride’s, and we could only stow two carry-on baggage in the cargo area—two fewer than the Telluride.
