Exterior

The Sportage PHEV is powered by the same system as the Sorento and Hyundai Tucson plug-in hybrids. A turbocharged 1.6-liter inline-four combined with an electric motor generates 261 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. The electric motor is powered by a 13.8-kWh battery, and the PHEV is only available in all-wheel drive.

The electric assistance provides the Sportage the oomph that the standard model sorely lacks, darting away from a halt and squirting forward when you need to be decisive in congested traffic. We timed a 6.9-second sprint to 60 mph. That’s 1.5 seconds slower than the plug-in Toyota RAV4 Prime, which has 41 horsepower more, but at 30 mph, the Kia is only 0.3 seconds slower.

Interior

A well-appointed cockpit enhances the comfortable driving experience, with more back legroom and baggage space thanks to a 3.4-inch wheelbase increase over the previous version. The material quality is excellent, but there is a lot of piano-black plastic that can gather fingerprints and dust, particularly around high-use places like the gear selector and window switches. Kia’s infotainment system is quick and straightforward, and the two 12.3-inch panels have clear, vivid images.

The controls below the central screen, on the other hand, are not as simple to use, with knobs and haptic buttons rotating between climate and music adjustments. While we enjoy the actual knobs, it’s easy to forget which mode you last left the controls in, with attempts to change the volume sometimes resulting in an unexpected blast of ice-cold air instead. The Sportage lacks wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but both systems are standard via a cable connection.
