The ZST is a substantial revamp of the original ZS tiny SUV (which is still available in basic Excite form for an incredibly low $22,490 drive-away), with four specifications, two engine and transmission combinations, and a slew of enhancements.
Rear legroom is just about 180cm for me when sitting behind my own driving position. The seat is high, so taller people would brush up against the sunroof cover, but it was comfortable for me. Exterior
There are a few niggles left. The driving posture is elevated, which is good, but the steering column only adjusts for tilt and not reach, so I never felt entirely at ease. Furthermore, the wheel is skewed to the left, causing you to drive crookedly. I suppose it’s one of those things you get used to.
The 1.3-litre three-cylinder turbo from MG seems small – and it is – but it packs a punch, producing 115kW at a high-ish 5200-6200rpm and 230Nm between 1800 and 4400rpm. The fact that a six-speed Aisin torque converter automatic moves the ratios and drives the front wheels rather than the entry-level engine’s CVT sweetens the deal even more.

Interior
The Essence comes with the sportiest 17-inch wheels, a six-speaker stereo, power front seats with heating, PVC seat trim, auto LED headlights, auto wipers, a massive double sunroof, air conditioning, adaptive cruise control, rear parking sensors, keyless entry and start, front, side, and reversing cameras, power windows and mirrors, and a space-saver spare.
The 10.1-inch touchscreen display is adorned with MG’s own software, which is a far superior attempt to the old ZS. It features navigation, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto, however it is really slow to work, which is a disappointment. I frequently found myself pressing buttons twice to get things to work, only to end up somewhere I didn’t want to be.
