Exterior

The 2.0-liter inline four-cylinder turbocharged engine powering the Golf R produces 315 horsepower and 310 lb-ft of torque, up from 288 horsepower and 280 lb-ft in the previous generation R. Either a six-speed manual or a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is available to go with the engine. The rear differential of the standard 4Motion all-wheel-drive system actively distributes torque between the left and right rear wheels for better handling. By pushing the “R” button on the steering wheel, the Golf R’s various drive modes (Comfort, Sport, Race, Special, Drift, and Individual) can be selected.

Every model includes larger front disc brakes than previously, a performance exhaust system, and variable-ratio steering. A pair of 19-inch wheels with summer performance tyres also support the vehicle. The Golf R demonstrated its agility and tenacity during our maiden drive in Germany thanks to its powerful engine, responsive dual-clutch gearbox, and clever all-wheel-drive system. The model we tested also included the Performance package, an add-on that adds two more drive modes, including the exciting Drift mode, which permits some tail-sliding shenanigans.

Interior

The new GTI cabin design, which offers a sportier look than the Golf from the previous generation, is imitated by the Golf R. Both sport a 10.2-inch digital gauge cluster with programmable layouts and a thick-rimmed steering wheel with touch-sensitive controls. The Golf R has bolstered front seats covered in Nappa leather, but unlike the GTI, it is not offered with plaid seat inserts.

These premium buckets include a blue “R” emblem in the backrest as well as blue and carbon-look accents in the side parts. Other interior innovations include ambient lighting with 30 colour options, pedals made of stainless steel, and extra dashboard trim with a carbon-like finish.
